When I started working for Vogue twenty years ago (22, to be more precise) I thought that the only way an Italian magazine could establish itself in the world and communicate with people speaking different idioms was using a universal language. And only images can be so powerful. Images speak to everyone in a direct manner.
A visual medium that enables to convey messages and news, arouse emotions and controversy. Photography is a great medium, easier to use today thanks to digital cameras, and helps remembering special moments and events. Photographs tell the history of a country, records the hardships and disasters of a war, the destructions caused by an earthquake, and the sweetness of a kiss. They imprint on your memory a moment that could only happen that way in that precise instant. And a moment may affect your entire life. For better and for worse.
